WiFi connectivity

I have a DR750S and would like to ask a few questions in regards to WiFi connectivity. My setup is a Samsung Tab A 8 mounted in the car to provide a constant WiFi hotspot that the dash cam is configured to connect to. I also have configured my home WiFi so the dash cam can use that also.

1. Does the dash cam connect to the available WiFi's in a preference order or simply by signal strength? My tablet is set to keep the hotspot active at all times so I don't have to keep turning it on and off, however when I park my car at home, I'd like the dash cam to connect to the home WiFi when available.

2. Is it possible to connect to the dash cam's WiFi while the dash cam is already connected to the hotspot? I'm no expert when it comes to WiFi but would this require the dash cam to have 2 WiFi transmitters? I can see the BlackVue WiFi hotspot network when I know the cam is connected to my hotspot in the car, but the transfer of files fails (I can see and change the settings though).  I'll try and test this further when time permits.

Cheers,

Paul

    Hello Paul

    1. The dashcam connects to the wifi hotspots in chronological order from the SSID saved in 1st spot in hotspot settings. therefore you have to turn off the tablet in order for it to connect to your home wifi router.

    2. Yes you can connect to dashcam's direct wifi even if it's already connected to hotspot. The dashcam works both in AP and STA mode at the same time.

    Thank you

I have a very similar setup to Paul and want the same behavior from the DR750S-2CH

SSID Slot 1 - my home Wifi (unlimited down/uploads) - always on

SSID Slot 2 - my in car MiFi (limited to 13GB of down/uploads) - always on

When I am parked at home (so home WiFi SSID from slot 1 in the cam configuration is available) I want the Blackvue to drop the connection to the Slot 2 SSID and move onto the Slot 1 home WiFi.  I am not sure at this stage if this is happening as the BlackVue iOS software gives no status information.

When I leave home I can tell that the DR750S-2CH is quite quickly connecting to the MiFi (great!) as I receive a push notification as it connects to the cloud service.

Noman from BlackVue can you please clarify?:

    1) Does the Blackvue DR750S-2CH disconnect from the preference 2 SSID when the preference 1 SSID becomes available?

    2) Is there any way for me to see status information from the camera so I can tell what network it has connected to at a specific point in time?  Is this functionality (or enhance logging) planned?

    3) Is there any way to download video files / connect to the camera directly via it's WiFi internet connectivity without using the cloud service (which is limited by by number of streams / download and also because it doesn't allow you to change settings on the camera)?  Is this planned?

Does anyone know a hack to achieve (3)?

I have a DR750S-2CH for at least 2 months, I havent installed it yet as I was hoping there would be a way to connect to the DASHCAM directy via my router from my PC and not via the cloud. Is this a possibility one day? Otherwise I think I'll be putting the DR750S-2CH in the bin.

    Hi Phil,

If you want I can send you my address... I'd be happy to dispose of it for you. ;-)

    Hello Michael

    1. If the SSID 2 is in range and the dashcam is connected to it, it won't automatically connect to SSID 1 when it becomes available. You have to disconnect it from SSID 2 in order to connect it to SSID 1.

2.Currently, there is no such scenario available where you can see the WIfi router's information but  i will forward your request to our R&D team for a possible inclusion of this feature in our future firmwares.

    3. You can download videos directly to your phone via direct wifi but you cannot do it through PC as of yet.

If you have any further questions please let us know.

    Thank you

    Hello Phil

In the current scenario you can download videos directly to your phone via direct wifi but you cannot do it through PC. Your suggestions to include this feature is noted and forwarded to our planning team for a possible inclusion in the upcoming firmwares.

    Thank you

I can see the merit of downloading to a phone as it allows the camera to remain in position and the phone doubles as the viewer screen but seems odd that the facility to view and download by direct WiFi to a PC isn't implemented when you view and download directly via an app. I'm at a loss why this isn't included from the beginning.

Michael DR750S-2CHabove is asking the same question.in his third paragraph.

    Leave it with you.

My feature request plays on the above.

    1) IF any configured AP detected, allow App (and PC/Mac application?) direct access AND (configurable) switch off direct Wifi.

I can not understand why direct access would require connecting to the direct WiFi? Not very user friendly having to change between hotspot and direct WiFi depending on what you want to do. In my mind, this is kind of a bug actually - or at least a design fault?

    2) IF any configured AP detected, connect to first in list. Disconnect from lower priority SSID if/when better priority SSID is detected (configurable)

    3) IF NOT any configured AP detected, set direct access WiFi to default mode.

It think these suggestions would make the BlackVue much more user friendly, and at the same time keep current functionallity mostly unchanged.

    4) IF any configured AP detected, periodically check for new firmware. Push notification if any, and configurable download and install.

    5) Speed camera warning?

Best regards from a happy DR900S-2CH owner,

    Tommy Vindvik

My sentiments entirely Tommy. I asked this question when I bought my DR750 6 months ago and I still haven't fitted it because it so clumsy and not user friendly to administer.

Come con Blackvue, please include direct WiFi with PC or Make the BlackVue appear on the home network for direct access.

I guess no progress has been made or even interest in implementing direct WifI connection from a Computer either directly with Camera or via hotspot and not only via Cloud.

Four months on and in a new year, is there progress on direct connectivity via own router with wifi yet pleas?

Well, my requests 2) and 4) are fulfilled - at least partially :)

So they are moving forward - slow and steady wins the race? :P

We customers always want improvements and new features fast - and of cause "our" features first :)

That said, I think Blackvue/Pittasoft still has quite a few improvements to implement in their products to measure up with competition and make the user experience even better and simpler :)

Fully agree with that Tommy. I'm still not using my 750 and using two cheap cameras for front and rear, the pair costing less than £100 for the pair and are far more user friendly that the Blackvue.

I just purchased a $79 usb WIFI adaptor so I can connect to my camera to download the days videos without having to stuff around with pulling mini memory cards. I get it all set up and connected and absolutely nothing to see. I am forced to use the darn cloud. Direct WIFI from my PC to the camera is a no brainer. I am a software engineer and never even questioned Blackvue would block this functionality. Can you imagine how much it would cost me to download 4k video over the internet paying for a hotspot connection. Its unacceptible. Very dissapointed with this.

I am checking what other camera options I have if this is an issue with them. Not to mention having to pay to add cameras to the software after paying a premium for the cameras.

Well nearly 2 years on and obviously no movement so far to provide a direct PC to Camera connection, in fact slightly worrying is no further updates to firmware, is this the final version of Blackvue?.

I have finally fitted the camera after it sitting in its box since purchase a year last June. I do hope its working as I haven't actually checked any recording since installation, cant be bothered with a fiddly phone app.

Well, 3 years on and still not direct access to camera via home WiFi. I guess that's never going to happen.
