Formatting microSD card

Considering the responses I had to my previous post about viewing downloaded videos in the Blackvue PC Viewer, I tried to reformat my microSD cards and reset the firmware to record in H.264 codec. The microSD card I removed from the dashcam allowed me to access the firmware settings, but a spare (in fact, the original Blackvue microSD card that shipped with the dashcam) did not have the firmware tab visible. I reformatted the second card to erase the old H.265-encoded recordings, but now I'm wondering what codec and sttings will be used when I insert that microSD card into the dashcam. Does the dashcam retain the firmware settings from the last microSD card? I have a DR900S-2CH.

I have another spare microSD card on order--scheduled to arrive today, in fact--and I'm wondering if the firmware tab will not show when I try to format it for use.

The firmware settings retain even when you format the microSD card or install a new firmware. If you have formatted SD card and want to change the firmware settings, first you have to put the SD card in the dashcam so that the firmware from dashcam's internal memory is copied onto the SD card (SD card initialization). Then you can change the setting via direct wifi or take out the SD card and change the settings using Viewer.

I used the Viewer software to make the changes, but the dashcam reset them after I re-inserted the microSD card back into the camera. How do I change the dashcam settings via direct WiFi? I don't see an option for that in my Blackvue iPhone app.

Thank you for your help, Bek. I am finally able to play back video from my dashcam, although it's in HD, not 4K.

How long does the "SD card initialization" usually take?

SD card initialization takes a minute or two, tops.
